AZ-900: Describe Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)

Cloud computing offers various service models to suit different levels of control, responsibility, and convenience. The three primary models are Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). Each model provides a different balance of flexibility, control, and administrative effort.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS provides the most control over computing resources. In this model, the cloud provider manages the physical hardware, while the customer is responsible for most software-related tasks.

  • Customers manage the operating systems, databases, and applications.
  • Physical infrastructure, such as servers and storage, is managed by the cloud provider.
  • Common use cases include test and development environments, website hosting, and extended data centers.

IaaS still requires customers to perform tasks such as operating system maintenance and application updates. For an overview of shared responsibilities, refer to “AZ-900: Describe the shared responsiblity model”.
